Madelyn has been using the potty sporadically for a few months now. I am a true believer that if a child is pushed to potty train they will resist, especially when you are talking about such a young child. I would take her if she asked, but didn’t think much of it.
Sunday morning something clicked in Madelyn’s head… she was ready. All morning she used the potty and did not have an accident. She would tell us when she needed to go and if we asked and she said no then we left her alone. She did such a great job. That afternoon Michael and Damian went to the Falcon’s game so Mad and I met my mom at the mall. Madelyn wore her panties and looked like such a big girl. About a mile from home she said she needed to go so we pulled over and used the potty in my trunk. She went potty and we were on our way.
She was doing such a great job at the mall when she said she needed to go tt. We immediately ran through the mall to find the nearest bathroom. The only problem she has is that she is sacred to death of public bathrooms. I guess I can’t blame her, who really likes a public bathroom? I put her on the potty and she was about to go when a lady turned on the dryer and it she started crying. After that there was no chance of her going. We left the mall soon after and I made the mistake of not putting her on the potty to go. We were just going across the street, but the mall was slammed and it took forever. While on the way over there she cried that she needed to go and she couldn’t hold it in. She wet a little in her panties. Like any other mom with a newly potty trained kid I have a few outfits in the car so I changed her. She wore her panties through the shoe store, dinner at Chipotle and Wal-Mart. While at Wal-Mart she picked out her own princess potty for the car. I’m not shocked my daughter wants a sparkly, pink royal potty! When we got home she went a ton. She had held it in.
The next morning we went with some friends to Chuck E Cheese. Since I had both of them I knew there was no way I could leave Damian in Chuck E Cheese and take her to the car to go potty so I put her in a diaper. She was insulted. About an hour after we got there she said she needed to go, but cried when I took her in the bathroom. She walked out and continued to play. When we got home about an hour and a half later she was completely dry. She had held it in until she could use the potty at home. Last night she didn’t have any accidents and continued to tell me when she needed to go.
Today, we went to Monkey Joes and I put her in a diaper to be safe. I figured if she was running around she might not think to come and tell me. Plus, if she should have an accident who wants their kid playing in her pee? Right as we were about to leave she told me she needed to go. We went outside to use her princess potty and she was completely dry. She used the potty and again was insulted to put her diaper on. We went to lunch and she stayed dry. She went just a little afterwards, but I didn’t make her put a diaper back on. When we got home she was dry and went potty right before I put her down for a nap.
Besides her fear of public bathrooms (which is a really big pain) finding panties that fit her is really hard. You can’t really tell in pictures because she has clothes on, but Madelyn is really skinny. At almost 23 months her 18 month clothes hang off the waist even with a diaper on. Without a diaper they barely stay on. Her panties are HUGE. The smallest I have been able to find is a 2/3 and I have to fold them a few times to stay on. I guess it is a nice problem!
I’m very proud of my little lady. She is so cute when she goes and I clap and she says, “Mama, clap ‘gin!” I’ll clap all day as long as she continues to use the potty!
