I guess I should get a mommy of the year award for writing this almost a month after he started… oh well, better late than never!
My little boy started back to school September 6th. He is in a 4 year old class at the same school as last year. The only difference is that he goes four days a week this year. I know a lot of families choose for their four year old to go to the lottery funded Pre-K program, but that isn’t for us. Damian just turned four and neither of us is ready for him to be gone seven hours a day, five days a week. Being gone four hours/ four days a week is perfect.
Damian has done FABULOUS! He is having so much fun. Luckily, one of his best buddies, Landon, is in his class again this year. If they weren’t together it would be bad. They are great friends and love being together. When they hang out outside of school it is great because he has a little brother a few months younger than Mad. Damian has also met a bunch of other friends. He has become better friends with kids he just knew on the playground last year and has met ones that he never knew before. I love picking him up and him telling me about his days adventures with his friends. He never gets in the car without a story to tell. Riding home from school listening to him is a highlight of my day.
Academically, Damian is doing superb. This year is much more academically focused than last year. His teacher said that her class is more academically based than most to prepare the kids. I love it and think that it is wonderful. Damian brings home a ton of work every day and he amazes me. He does so well on it. Very rarely does he miss anything. I’m one proud mommy!
Damian has adapted very well to going back to school. He LOVES going. Madelyn on the other hand didn’t take the change too well. The entire first week I would drop him off and she would scream, “Brofer, Brofer, Deeeeeee!” for a good twenty minutes. It made for long mornings. Once we would get home she would turn the house upside down looking for him. After a few days she realized that she could play with all of his “special” toys and mommy wouldn’t tell so she quickly realized a few hours a week without Brother was ok.
So far (I know this can change at any moment) he has had wonderful behavior. He is at the age where he loves to talk about poop and bodily functions. Our rule is that while he is at school he can’t talk about it, but once he gets in the car he can sing any nasty song he wants to about poop. Once he gets in the car he just can’t help himself. After going four hours without saying the word poop he must sing his songs. I know I shouldn’t, but it makes me laugh.
I’m so proud of him for doing so well his first month. It doesn’t seem possible that he is already 4 and doing real things at school. I love how much he loves school. I hope he always wants to learn and looks forward to it. I’m so proud of the young man he is becoming.
