Passing

At the end of June my grandmother Blanche was diagnosed with lung cancer. At her age (88, she turned 89 last Sunday) chemotherapy wasn’t an option. It was a waiting game. The form of lung cancer she had is very aggressive and some do not survive long at all. The best thing is to remain comfortable and pain free. After the diagnosis we watched her very slowly go downhill.

Last Sunday night my entire family gathered at my mom’s house to celebrate her 89th birthday. I could tell she was sick, but she still looked pretty good. She got to watch her great-grandchildren play and got to talk to all of us. She ate cake and had a fun night. Monday she got worse and by yesterday her diagnosis was not good. I had a jam packed day, but I knew it would be the last time I would get to see her so Damian and I went to visit her. She was on oxygen and it was tough to see. When I told her Damian and I were leaving she got very upset and started to cry. I told her that if Madelyn was in a good mood we would come visit today. She didn’t make it that far. I’m very happy that we got to go and say goodbye. As much as you can say goodbye.

When I got done running today I noticed that my mom had called so I called her back. She gave me the news so Damian went to a friend’s house, Madelyn went to the office and I headed to Lawrenceville. I know she is with my granddad and Barbara right now so I have peace. I’m happy that she didn’t suffer long and lived a long, fulfilling life. I think it is much worse to be here and in pain. I’m happy that my dad got to be with her right before she died and we got to see her yesterday. RIP Grandmother Blanche.

*Happy post about Damian’s first week of school coming soon!

I am sorry for your loss.  It's never easy to lose anyone, especially to a disease like cancer.  I'm still shocked how quickly leukemia took my grandmother.  She was diagnosed Thanksgiving 2010 and passed away in February.  I am glad you and Damian got to see her one last time.  You will all meet again one day.
